Will using the disk defragmenter help speed my computer up?

with 8 comments

My uncle used it about 4 years ago I think on this computer and I forget why he did it but I think it was to clean it up so it would move a little faster but I’m not so sure. It has been really slow lately and I really haven’t thought about doing that disk fragmenter again until recently. Can someone give me some details on what it does and will it keep all of my stuff on the computer without tampering or deleting anything?

  1. The Windows Registry is the master control center for your operating system and applications it runs. Corruption or overload registry issues can cause all sorts of pc performance problems, including poor application startup times, slow Windows start-up, extremely slow shut down, slow internet surfing, inability to resume from computer sleep and more.Cleaning, compacting, and optimizing your Windows registry can go a long way to dramatically speeding up your computer’s performance, start-up and shutdown speed.

  2. Clean windows registry can speed up the computer.
Over time, you install new programs, uninstalled unimportant programs, update software’s, install new devices,
download files from the web, etcetera, hence embarking all records in the registry system.
This is normal, but it is not wise to leave it untouched.
Once in a while, you have to check and remove files that are no longer in use to maintain the speed of your PC.

  3. Its just a normal maintenance task which puts back files that get fragmented (which happens in the process of adding/deleting/editing files) back together in a sequential order in order to speed up data access. This means files and programs and will open without lags and it prevents slowdowns caused by fragmentation. In other words like its easier for you to find what you want in a neatly organized book shelf as opposed to one where all books lie scattered, the HDD can function faster if the files are arranged in an orderly fashion rather than fragmented and scattered.
Try Diskeeper09. Its the best intelligent autodefragger.

  4. A hard disk drive is designed to store and provides relatively quick access to large amounts of data on an electromagnetically charged surface or set of surfaces. It contains various kinds of files, included the system and application localization resources, OS temp files, video format files, etc. These various file not only often mess up your system to a temp shutdown, but also are attacked by the malwares. Some malwares come into your hard disk when you are surfing on the Internet in order to attack your whole system and steal your personal information to make illegal profits through these files. By freeing up your disk space, your system will run more smoothly and faster than before.

  5. yes, it do help. obviously, defragmenting your disk doesn’t delete anything, as far as i am concern. in fact, it would be much ‘cleaner’ and faster after u do it. it will take a while to defragment but it works to speed your pc up.

  6. It won’t prevent deletions or tampering or increase security. De-fragmenting (defraging) simply moves all parts (fragments) of a particular file together so the hard drive does not waste a lot of time looking for them. It can lead to noticeable increases in speed. It also moves all files to the same part of the drive, leaving all of the vacant, unused area in another area. Think of it as a game of Tetris that packs your drive more efficiently.

  8. Yes, if you have not defragged in 4 years, it will definitely help to speed up the computer.

First do a disk cleanup. Right click the drive in My Computer, choose Properties and Disk cleanup. Delete the temp files, temporary internet files, empty the recycle bin etc. Don’t compress the drive contents.

Since you have not defragged in 4 years, I suggest running a chkdsk first to clear the filesystem of any errors.
    Instructions are here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265

Then you can defrag. I never liked the in-built Windows defragger; instead I use Diskeeper. Head over to http://www.diskeeper.com and download the free trial version of Diskeeper 2009. It’s the best defragger for Windows and defrags everything including large files and system files, even with low free space. Install Diskeeper, turn on the auto defrag mode; Diskeeper will do everything in the background automatically, and you can use your computer as usual.
