  1. Disk Check and Disk Defragmenter. These should be the very first things to run on a computer which has lost its performance. Open My Computer and right-click the C: drive, select Properties, select Tools. Don’t underestimate these two utilities!

After that, clean out your temporary internet files. You pay also want to delete your prefetch items if it’s slow when booting (google for instructions for your version of windows).

You can also use msconfig (click Start->Run->type in MSCONFIG and press OK) and clear unneeded programs from the startup tab (things like Java, Google Updater, ITunesHelperApp, any HP software, etc).

You may also want to uninstall any old programs you do not use anymore.

You can regain lost performance by using nothing more than Windows’ built in utilities. CCleaner is good for removing orphaned registry entries, which is the only thing I use it for, and I recommend doing this as well.

  2. HijackThis is an excellent program to view startup entries for your computer.

If you scan and save a logfile, it even has a handy tool on there to show what’s unnecessary, bad, good, etc.

  5. CCLeaner, a good virus protection (for free I like Spyware Terminator), and running regular defragmenters is about all you really need/can do.

  7. ‘Advanced System Care’. One click a day and it cleans and optimizes your whole whole system. And its freeware. You can go to Major geeks.com and download from there, or just type it in your search bar.

  8. Shane,

If you want to speed up your computer you better select and buy a good PC optimizer and registry cleaner from Intel Software Directory http://ibx.intel.com/directory/Default.aspx
